Ugh

Between work, a trip to Vegas, and the hectic Christmas season, I was unable to keep the injuries up to date for the final 2 weeks, so I apologize once again for doing that. Luckily there wasn't dick to pick up on the waiver wire, so I didn't miss anything there.

I do plan on going back through my preseason draft guide, one position (and player) at a time, and seeing how my analysis panned out. I'll also put together some lessons learned and a few final thoughts on the season. I'm on PTO from work and will be avoiding the computer as much as possible through the end of this week, but I should do my season wrap-up over the next 2 weeks or so.

Week 14 Walking Wounded

I apologize for the late posting this week, but I'm swamped at work. There weren't any good waiver candidates this week as I already told you about Tashard Choice last week. There also weren't any injury problems in the Thursday night game, I didn't miss telling you guys anything.

QB:

Matt Schaub - Schaub will start in week 14, but has a very tough match up against GB.

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck has suffered a setback with his back and is listed as doubtful for week 14. Seneca Wallace will start, and Hasselbeck can be kicked to the waivers so you have a backup QB secured.

Trent Edwards - Edwards will not start in week 14, and he might be the emergency QB at best. JP Losman will fill in, and hopefully hook up with Evans for a patented bomb or five.

Derek Anderson - Anderson, filling in for Quinn, suffered a torn MCL and was placed on IR, ending his horrible 2008 season.

RB:

Brian Westbrook - Westbrook has missed a few practices this week, but I still fully expect him
to play. Philly is probably just giving him as much time off as possible after his Thursday night explosion last week, and given all the injuries he's dealing with at this point.

Marion Barber - Barber suffered a dislocated toe last week, and he's questionable at best to play this week. Given he's hobbled by his injury and facing the #1 run defense in football, you have to sit him. Tashard Choice will start if Barber can't go, and he isn't a bad option, but I wouldn't use him.

Clinton Portis - Portis now has an injury to every part of his body. He's expected to start in week 14, but since he plays on Sunday night, he's not worth waiting for given the match up against Baltimore. Betts would start in his place, but isn't much of an option either. Much like Barber, there's just very little upside starting a hurting RB against a top notch run defense.

Steven Jackson - Jackson returned in week 14 and ran well against a tough run defense. He's been limited a bit this week in practice, but should be in for a full workload in week 14. Start him.

Reggie Bush - Bush threw up a stinker, and unfortunately he was clearly limited in his return. He says he feels much better this week than any previous week, and he'll start in week 14.

Willie Parker - Parker's ongoing injury saga continues, but he should be all systems go in week 14. Given the PIT short yardage conundrum, he might not score, but Dallas can be run on.

Selvin Young - Young should return in week 14, but only as a situation RB behind new starter Peyton Hillis.

WR:

Plaxico Burress - Burress finally did something productive for his team by shooting himself. He's done for the year, and hopefully heading to prison. Fucking idiot.

Matt Jones - Jones has already been practicing this week, so he won't be suspended. He'll start in week 14.

TE:

Kellen Winslow - Winslow is out in week 14 with an ankle injury. One has to wonder about the severity and whether they'll just shut him down with nothing going right for them. Winslow is a self-proclaimed soldja, though, so who knows.

D:

Minnesota - Normally one missing player doesn't make a huge difference, but if the Williams Wall have their suspensions upheld, you might want to think twice about starting the Vikings, even against Detroit. I probably still would, but their run D would take a massive hit.

Week 13 Injury Updates

All players have been updated for week 13. The biggest news is Plaxico Burress being declared out. Willie Parker will play, and Brandon Jacobs is expected to play, but Jacobs is more of a game time decision.

Eddie Royal is questionable in a bit of a surprise, but is expected to play. Keep an eye on him as he's a game time decision in a late Sunday game.

Browns QB Brady Quinn Done For The Year

The Cleveland Browns will place QB Brady Quinn on IR with a broken right index finger.

This is horrible news for the Browns as they really could have used the rest of the season to evaluate what exactly they have in Brady Quinn. If anything, it seemed obvious to me that the team responded to him better as soon as he took the field. You need to throw out last weekend's game as Quinn was obviously playing hurt.

Fantasy Impact: Drop Quinn, and Derek Anderson becomes a very low level QB2. Anderson managed to suck it up despite solid talent around him in the first half of the season, and his schedule down the stretch (IND, TEN, PHI the next 3 weeks) is horrible. I'd stay away, and I'd rather have someone like Collins who is far less likely to implode should your QB1 go down.

This is bad news for Winslow and Edwards as Quinn used Winslow immediately, and he was starting to use Edwards more too. Expect them to both be more inconsistent.

Week 13 Waiver Wire Possibilities

There really isn't anyone emerging at this point that I haven't covered so far. Two guys worth nothing are Tashard Choice and Dominik Hixon. With Felix Jones out for the season, Choice becomes Marion Barber's handcuff, and while he isn't nearly as talented as Barber, he'd be the undisputed starter for a team that can score. Hixon is the main backup for Plaxico Burress, who again can't stay healthy. He's not a bad stash in case Burress misses some games. Also worth noting is Dominic Rhodes. With Addai healthy, there should be no Addai owner who doesn't have Rhodes stashed. He will have plenty of fantasy value should Addai get hurt again.

Week 13 Walking Wounded

QB:

Donovan McNabb - No injury, but McNabb was inexplicably benched in week 12 for the 2nd half. This is probably the worst move of Andy Reid's career as he let a very winnable game go by switching to a clearly over-matched rookie in Kevin Kolb who clearly was not ready for NFL action. On the road against Baltimore and you bench your franchise QB after a bad past 6 quarters or so? They deserved to be killed. McNabb will start in week 13, and I would still use him if you have been. McNabb will bounce back...he always does. *edit* McNabb lit up the Cardinals on Thursday Night, so hopefully you used him!

Matt Schaub - Schaub has a torn MCL, and he is out in week 13. There is growing concern that he'll be placed on IR, so dump him if you need another QB immediately. *edit* Out of nowhere, Schaub has been taking practice reps and has a chance to play on Monday Night Football. If you have Rosenfels and Schaub is available, grab him immediately.

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck again looked very rusty, but he seems fine health-wise now. Only use him if you're desparate. *edit* Hasselbeck looked better on Thursday, and he could be an option against the right team moving forward.

Brady Quinn - Quinn has a fractured bone in his right index finger, and it obviously impacted his performance last weekend. Not that you should be starting Quinn anyways, but he's not to be trusted until he proves he's healthy. *edit* Quinn was placed on IR, ending his season.

Marc Bulger - Bulger got concussed again in week 12, and his status for week 13 is iffy, much like the decisions he makes on the field these days. He shouldn't be owned in 12 team/1 QB leagues. *edit* Bulger will start in week 13, but not for your fantasy team. I hope.

RB:

Brian Westbrook - Westbrook continues to battle ankle and knee injuries that have de-railed his season. Given the knee injury that Correll Buckhlater suffered, and his extensive usage in week 12, expect Westbrook to get the short practice week off and be ready on Thursday night. *edit* Westbrook is back in the good graces of his owners with a huge Thursday night game. He's fine moving forward.

Steven Jackson - Jackson's week 13 status is unclear, but there's some optimism in St. Louis that he'll have a shot at returning this week. Keep an eye on his practice schedule. *edit* Jackson did not put in a full practice, but did put in limited practices all week long. The prevailing thought is that he'll play. He has a tough match up against Miami and isn't 100% yet, so be careful using him depending on your options.

Reggie Bush - Bush still hasn't returned, and there's no question in my mind that Bush simply isn't much of a football player unless he's 100%. He's not tough. He seems likely to return this week, but who knows at this point. Keep an eye on his practice schedule. *edit* Bush is listed as questionable, but is expected to go. I'd use him.

Willie Parker - Parker has yet again aggravated his knee injury and is iffy to play in week 13. Owners know the drill....have Mewelde Moore on standby and, at this point with Moore's performance and superior receiving ability, hope Parker sits out until 100%. *edit* Parker put in 2 full practices and appears to be ready in week 13, so use him if you have him.

Brandon Jacobs - Jacobs wasn't declared out until right before the game, which violated the trust we put into the "probable" tag. Jacobs himself seemed to indicate he wasn't that close to playing last week. Keep Ward around and monitor his practice schedule. *edit* Jacobs is listed as questionable, but is expected to start. Keep an eye on the game day inactives.

Jonathan Stewart - Stewart was in a walking boot again after Sunday's game, but avoided questions about his ankle/foot/toe. As he proved last week, he's still not ready to consistent contribute with his carries. *edit* Stewart is fine and will play in week 13, but he's not a RB2 option with DeAngelo Williams the clear feature RB.

Selvin Young - Young has a good chance to return in week 13, but that hardly makes him a recommended fantasy play. He'll likely return to the same 10 carry or so role that he held before getting injured. *edit* Young is questionable and hardly worth thinking about this week.

Ahman Green - Green suffered yet another knee injury and has been placed on IR. He is done for the season.

WR:

Plaxico Burress - I apologize for missing him last week. Burress continues to have problems with his hamstring and will be iffy to play in week 13. Keep an eye on him, but you should know better than to rely on him at this point anyways. *edit* Burress is out in week 13. Hixon will start in his place, but has a tough match up. He could be used as a WR3 depending on your options.

Santonio Holmes - Holmes suffered a concussion in week 12, but appears ready to roll in week 13. We'll know for sure later this week. *edit* Holmes will start in week 13, and hopefully he can continue the roll he was on in week 12.

Matt Jones - Jones played and appeared healthy in week 12, but he maintains his week-to-week status thanks to the looming suspension. He seems likely to play in week 13 from all accounts, however. *edit* Jones will start in week 13.

Greg Camarillo - Camarillo was surprisingly an effective possession receiver for the Dolphins this season, but unfortunately this underdog story comes to an end as he tore his ACL in week 12 and is done for the season.

TE:

None

Sunday Morning Injury Update

I have updated all injuries to the best of my knowledge.

Brian Westbrook is active, but do not start him. His role today is unknown, his match up against Baltimore is brutal, and he's far from 100%.

Reggie Bush is out for Monday Night. Pierre Thomas is a solid RB2 play.

Brandon Jacobs, after positive news all week, has been declared inactive in a complete surprise to everyone. Get him out of your lineups ASAP if possible, and Derrick Ward is a decent RB2.

Thursday Night Recap

Let see how I did.

1)
Chad Johnson has been deactivated for this game for supposedly sleeping through a team meeting. Remove him from your lineup immediately...not that he should be there anyways.

- This was just news.

2) Start Willie Parker. Not only are the Bengals barely average while allowing 4.2 YPC, but I expect the Steelers to take an early lead and blast the Bengals all game with the rushing attack.

- Blah, although the re-injury of his knee pre-matured ended his night. Cincy loaded up to stop the run, and Pittsburgh did not do a good job adjusting their running calls, instead stubbornly pounding it up the middle despite not having any success doing such. Moore started having success running the ball in the 2nd half as the passing game starting opening up rushing lanes, and I'm sure Parker would have been the beneficiary of that if he had stayed healthy. He had a chance to score a TD on a goal line carry in the first half, but he got stone-walled.

3) Start Santonio Holmes. More of a stupid hunch than anything else. I think the Steelers will unleash at least one big play-action play to Holmes tonight, and I expect a pretty solid fantasy line from him.

- Pretty solid line, and it would have been even nicer had he not be knocked the fuck out on one of Big Ben's patented hospital balls. The concussion ended his night early, and he might not play next week depending on the severity.

4) Bench all Bengals, except maybe Housh. They will be missing both of their starting offensive tackles, and the Steelers are #1 in the NFL against both the pass and the run. Fitzpatrick is going to be running for his life, Benson will have nowhere to run, and while TJ might seem like a decent play, I'd only use him as a WR3 at the very most. Someone will have to catch the ball with Chad Johnson out, but it's going to make it easier for the Steelers D to key in on him.

- All Bengals looked like crap last night, Housh included.

5) Start the Steelers D. I fear for Fitzpatrick's well being this evening.

- I think everyone was disappointed with the 7 points the PIT D put up in normal Yahoo scoring. Cincy ran a close-to-the-vest offensive scheme very unlikely to turn the ball over, get sacked, or pick up many yards, and it worked on all fronts. Unfortunately, the dominant PIT D last night didn't show up in the fantasy stat sheet, unless you get points for yards allowed.

6) Bet the Steelers. The line is at 11, but this is shaping up to be one ugly game that heavily favors the Steelers. A 31-3 type score would not surprise me at all.

- Nice. I doubled my balance last night with this call, although it did take a final PIT TD to get there. PIT really came out flat in the 1st quarter, and it almost cost us the spread. I have to thank Glenn Holt for this one, as his momentum-killing drop on Cincy's second drive completely drained the life out of their offense until a late 4th quarter drive that got them a FG.

Week 12 Waiver Wire Possibilities

QB:

There really isn't anybody worth picking up that I haven't mentioned before. I only mention players once in the week they should be picked up, or at least that's how I've been writing these articles. Late bloomers such as Tyler Thigpen, fairly reliable QB2s such as Shaun Hill, and recovered QBs such as Matt Hasselbeck should all be owned.

RB:

Warrick Dunn - Dunn might have been cut after his neck stinger a couple weeks ago, but with Earnest Graham's season-ending ankle injury, Dunn becomes a featured RB once again. He posted mediocre rushing stats last week, but that's because he faced the monstrous MIN run D. He padded his stats with an excellent receiving line, and he gets the Lions in week 12. He's the top add this week.

Antonio Pittman - Pittman has emerged as the clear top option in the STL backfield with Steven Jackson injured, and his two non-injured starts in weeks 8 and 11 have produced solid rushing numbers. This team is going to struggle to score, and the loss of Pace hurts the line, but Pittman can be a RB2 in the right match up.

Pierre Thomas - He's more of an add for Bush owners, and he's not going to be worth using if Bush returns in week 12. Thomas took McAllister's production in week 11 by looking far better and producing a great overall game. Non-Bush owners cannot rely on him this week, but he would be worth a RB2 start if Bush fails to suit up again.

Ahmad Bradshaw - Another speculative add here. Should Jacobs miss week 12, Bradshaw will split work with Derrick Ward. Ward seems highly likely to take the goal line carries, but Bradshaw could be a lower RB2 if he's evenly splitting time. He's not a great option since he's dependent on Jacobs missing week 12, but he's an interesting stash.

WR:

Justin Gage - Where the hell did that come from? Collins has come alive the past two weeks as opposing defenses are looking to hold down the potent TEN rushing attack, but don't expect Collins to keep tossing multiple TDs. This was a fluke week, and Brandon Jones remains the better bet over the rest of the season.

TE:

Dustin Keller - Simply put, I was dead wrong about Keller last week. Instead of going back into hibernation, Keller exploded again for 8 catches, 87 yards, and a TD that he dropped in the end zone. With Coles and Cotchery demanding outside attention and no Jets WR claiming the middle of the field, Keller has responded by assuming that role. Pick him up if he's still there, and he's worth starting as a lower level TE1 at this point. This week's match up against TEN is very rough, so keep expectations in check.

Ben Watson - Watson exploded with an 8 catch performance in week 12 as Matt Cassel exploded for 400 passing yards. Now his week 12 opponent, the Jets, are a great run D, and the Patriots altered their gameplan to go pass heavy as it presented them their best chance for success. Watson undoubtedly has the talent to put up TE1 production, but his role in the offense varies by week and by game plan. You could stash him, but making him your weekly option would be a desparate move.

Week 12 Walking Wounded

I had updated the injuries last week, but forgot to put up a post stating I did so. Sorry.

QB:

Matt Schaub - Schaub has a torn MCL, and he is out in week 12. There is growing concern that he'll be placed on IR, so dump him if you need another QB immediately.

Kyle Orton - Orton obviously played injured on Sunday, and he was not effective with his mobility at all. Keep an eye on his status this week, but it seems likely he'll be ready for week 12. There's no reason to risk playing him until he proves he can play at a high level again. Make him do that on your bench. *edit* Orton will start in week 12, and while he has a great match up against STL this week, he's still risky.

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck looked very rusty, but there were positive signs as he played both poorly and well during different parts of the game. Give him another week, assuming the dazed Hasselbeck in the post-game press conference was indeed not the result of a concussion. *edit* Hasselbeck will start in week 12, but is no more than a QB2 until he shows something on the field.

Daunte Culpepper/Drew Stanton - Culpepper appears to have assumed the true starting position on this team, but letting him anywhere near your fantasy lineup would probably get you a spot on the Lions' coaching staff.

RB:

Clinton Portis - Portis honestly looked 100% on Sunday night, and odds are he'll be fine for week 12, but check back just in case to keep an eye on his practice schedule. *edit* Portis is expected to play, but check the game day inactives. He's a good start against a weak Seattle run D.

Steven Jackson - Jackson has already been ruled out for week 12. Continue to stash him in hopes he'll return for the playoffs as there won't be a better option on waivers.

Reggie Bush - Bush is scheduled to return this week, but he's also never been a fast healer. Keep an eye on his practice schedule this week. *edit* Bush is a full-blown gametime decision, and my guess is that he'll sit. Pierre Thomas will likely see the majority of touches if Bush does sit.

Brandon Jacobs - Jacobs sprained his knee in week 11, but he has consistently been optimistic about his chances to play in week 12 since the end of the game. Keep a close eye on his practice schedule, and make sure you have Derrick Ward if at all possible. *edit* Jacobs appears ready to go, but have Derrick Ward on stand-by and check the game day inactives. Keep in mind that Ward and Bradshaw will split touches, but Ward should have the edge, plus the goal line carries should Jacobs sit.

Willis McGahee - McGahee left with an ankle injury, but it is assumed to be minor, and that he was held out of the rest of week 11 with Baltimore getting blown out at that point. Keep an eye on his practice schedule, though. *edit* McGahee is active, but who knows what his role will be. Philly is strong against the run and McGahee is not an advised start.

Selvin Young - It's really hard to suggest holding onto Young unless your waiver pool is picked dry. With Hillis, PJ Pope, and Tatum Bell all running fairly well last week, who knows what the hell will happen when Young gets healthy. *edit* Young is out in week 12.

Earnest Graham - Graham has been put on IR and is done for the year with an ankle injury. Warrick Dunn will replace him in the lineup.

Darren McFadden - McFadden continues to be limited by his turf toes, and Justin Fargas is clearly the feature RB for the Raiders anyways. Keep him stashed at the end of your bench, but his 2008 season appears to be headed as a lost one. *edit* McFadden will play against Denver, and has a great match up, but there's been zero indication so far that Fargas will lose his primary ball carrier status.

WR:

Matt Jones - Jones missed week 11 with his thigh injury, and he continues to be week to week with his pending suspension. Keep an eye on him this week. *edit* Jones is starting in week 12 and can be used as a WR3.

Derrick Mason - Mason again played very well through his separate shoulder, and we can assume he'll start again in week 12. Keep an eye on his practice schedule. *edit* Mason will start in week 12, but has a tough match up and still isn't 100%.

Deion Branch - Branch looked as healthy as he's been in a while on Sunday, but until Hasselbeck finds his rhythm, there's no point in using him as a WR3. *edit* Branch will start in week 12 and has a good chance of being SEA's leading receiver this week, but his ceiling is low until Hasselbeck and Branch shake off the rust.

TE:

Tony Scheffler - Scheffler, clearly hobbled by his nagging groin injury, posted a fat 0 to screw his owners (myself included) on Sunday. Unless he puts in a full practice this week, I'm going to advise attempting to find another option. *edit* Scheffler practiced in full this week and will start in week 12. Use him.

Patriots/Jets Tonight

Get your Patriots RBs out of your lineup. Sammy Morris is active, so that completely crowds the backfield situation. Green-Ellis ran well in his place, but I would guess Morris will regain his starting job, but probably not dominate carries. Green-Ellis has been great in short yardage, and Faulk will still play as a 3rd down specialist. Given how good the Jets' run defense is, there's no point in using any of them. It's a total guessing game with limited upside.

Week 11 Waiver Wire Possibilities

QB:

Tyler Thigpen - Who knew? Thigpen went from whipping boy to potential QB1 material in the right match up. He's definitely worth a stash as KC transitions from a power running team to a spread passing attack in a few weeks. Thigpen has it working for him, and with Gonzalez, Bowe, and a resurgent Mark Bradley, he's making it work. He's a good QB2.

Matt Hasselbeck - He's available in both of my leagues, so that means he's probably available in at least a few leagues out there. He isn't going to save your QB position, but it's hard to imagine a healthy Hasselbeck not being at least a QB2.

RB:

Peyton Hillis - Hillis is the favorite to start at RB for the Broncos after the IR placement of Michael Pittman, Andre Hall, and Ryan Torain over the last 2 weeks, plus the lingering groin injury to Selvin Young. He's likely not their 2008 solution to the RB situation, especially after today's re-signing of Tatum Bell, but he's got a good chance to have low RB2 value in week 11.

Dominic Rhodes - Rhodes simply looks like the better RB this season. Addai hasn't looked good all year, and it's worth noting that not only was Rhodes the RB on the field during the Colts game winning drive, but it was also Rhodes who caught the game winning TD. He's earned at least a timeshare, and Addai could still be hurting. Stash him.

Ladell Betts - Betts is a must-have for Portis owners now at least as insurance. As Portis continues to break down this season, Betts has proven that he can be a capable replacement. Betts is coming back from a knee injury himself, and he might not be ready this week, but Portis owners need to grab him for the stretch run.

Selvin Young/Tatum Bell - Both of these guys are worth throwing on the end of your fantasy roster as guys who have potential to start at least a game for the Broncos over the rest of the season.

WR:

Bobby Engram/Deion Branch - If Hasselbeck comes back healthy, these two will have value again, especially Engram since he doesn't battle vaginitis on a weekly basis. Stash material.

Josh Morgan - Morgan had another solid game last night, posting a nice TD catch, albeit a shaky one that he bobbled for a few steps before gliding into the end zone with it. He has a chance to be the top WR for the 49ers over the rest of the season, so he too is stash material.

Jason Hill - Another 49ers youngster that could start to amass value. His 7 catch, 84 yard effort last night was worth noticing.

Brandon Jones - Jones has flirted with being the Titans top WR before, but the inconsistent Vince Young and a knee injury have prevented that from happening. If more teams follow the Bears game plan and sell out to stop the Titans running game (obviously not all defenses are equipped to do it as successfully), Collins is going to need a WR to step up, and Jones arguably has the most talent to do it with. A speculatory pick who won't be consistent, but he's worth stashing.

TE:

Dustin Keller - Keller undoubtedly caught a lot of attention after single handedly dominating Brett Favre's targets last week, but he's a flash in the pan who won't be consistent. Only try him if you're desparate.

Billy Miller - Miller is reeling in a lot of targets from Drew Brees whenever Shockey isn't playing, so if Shockey's ankle proves to be a problem moving forward, Miller is not a bad option.

Week 11 Walking Wounded

QB:

Tony Romo - Romo returned to practice today and is slated to return in week 11. This is huge news for all Cowboys players. *edit* Romo put in a full week of practice and will start in week 11.

Matt Schaub - Schaub has a torn MCL, and he is out in week 11. He is expected to miss 2 more weeks.

Kyle Orton - Orton seems to have actually avoided a high ankle sprain, and he has a chance to return in week 11. We should know for sure on Friday. If he practices fully by then, he'll be ready. *edit* Orton will start in week 11, but given how good GB's pass D is, don't use him.

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck is tentatively slated to return in week 11. Needless to say, he's not worth starting in 1 QB leagues, but he should definitely be picked up if he's been dropped. He'd be a solid QB2 at worst down the stretch. *edit* Hasselbeck will start in week 11 and can be used in an emergency. It'd be smart to give him a week, however.

Marc Bulger - Bulger's starting status appears tenuous right now. He doesn't look like the same QB anymore, but the team around him is horrible right now. He's not worth keeping at this point. Nor is Trent Green worth stashing, so don't even think about it. *edit* Bulger will start, but if he sucks it up, expect Green to relieve him.

Daunte Culpepper/Drew Stanton - Both played last week, both mostly sucked, and both will be a gametime decision as to who the starter is in week 11. If you're relying on them, your team sucks too.

JaMarcus Russell - Russell missed week 10 with knee tendonitis. He might return in week 11, but who the hell cares? I just wasted my time writing this, but you just wasted your time reading it, so we're even.

RB:

Clinton Portis - Portis' status for week 11 is in doubt after it was revealed that he has a sprained MCL in his knee. *edit* Portis will only play part of the game in week 11, if at all, so he's not worth starting. Ladell Betts will start in his place, and he'll be a safer play if Portis is inactive.

Steven Jackson - Jackson's week 11 status is completely up in the air, and given he didn't practice at all last week, I can't imagine he'll play this week. Antonio Pittman has seemingly emerged as his true backup. *edit* Jackson the Vagina is out in week 11. Pittman will start and could suffice as a RB2 option.

Willie Parker - Parker either does or does not have a torn labrum, for those wondering. Just to clear that up. The press says he does, Parker says he doesn't, and one of them is a filthy liar. Parker is slated to return in week 11, but we'll keep an eye on the practice schedule. *edit* Parker will start in week 11. He's a bit risky, but SD has not been good on defense this year.

Reggie Bush - Bush is tentatively expected to return in week 11, and his match up against KC is ideal. Keep a close eye on his practice status this week. *edit* Bush is out in week 11 as NO plays it smart to keep him on the bench in a very winnable game. Expect him to return in week 12.

Larry Johnson - Woman beater might return in week 11, and given a decent match up against NO, it's worth keeping an eye on his status. *edit* LJ will start, and can be used as a RB2.

Jamaal Charles - Charles aggravated his ankle sprain and left early in week 10. His week 11 status is completely up in the air. *edit* Charles is questionable, but isn't worth using yet.

Willis McGahee - McGahee is determined to screw his owners in a way only the Kama Sutra could come up with. In week 10, he came off the bench, but then blasted the Texans defense for 25/112 and 2 TDs. I'm done making suggestions on starting/sitting him, but he has a horrible match up against the Giants in week 11. *edit* McGahee will likely start, but isn't worth using vs. the Giants.

Ryan Torain - Well, that was fun. 12 carries, 68 yards, a TD, and a torn ACL. Torain is done for the year.

Selvin Young - A clearly hobbled Young tried to substitute for Torain, but was at far less than 100% before leaving with a re-aggravation of his groin injury. His status will be uncertain for week 11. Peyton Hillis is set up to start for Denver. *edit* Young is out in week 11. Denver's backfield is a mess between Hillis, Tatum Bell, and Joe the Plumber.

Sammy Morris - Morris is still week-to-week. I'll update his practice schedule on Friday. *edit* I forgot Morris played on Thurs., but I did post Thursday before the game to not use him. He'll be the starter moving forward.

Warrick Dunn - Dunn looks likely to return in week 11, but with Cadillac Williams set to return, this backfield situation could turn into the Ravens pt. 2. *edit* Dunn will probably start in week 11, but against MIN, look elsewhere.

WR:

Santana Moss - Moss is still having problems with his hamstring, but everyone says he'll be ready in week 11. Given he's as reliant on his speed as any WR in the league, I'd really want to see a full practice from him before starting him with confidence, depending on your team's alternatives. *edit* Moss is expected to start, and with Portis likely out, Moss should be a big part of the game plan.

Chris Chambers - Chambers continues to be hobbled by his ankle injury and is not worth starting until he can prove that he's healthy. Malcolm Floyd surprisingly started over him in week 10, and he played well. *edit* Chambers has a bad match up against the Colts this week, so even though he's close to 100%, it's a good idea to use a safer option.

Torry Holt - Honestly? I'd rather have Mark Bradley at this point. There's been no reported injury, but Holt has clearly lost it, and the offense around him is disgusting. Don't let him near your starting lineup.

Matt Jones - Jones is week-to-week with his suspension, and now he has a thigh injury. If the thigh injury will cost him time, it's obvious that he'll drop his appeal and start serving his suspension immediately. He has a really touch match up against TEN this week, so you shouldn't be counting on him anyways. *edit* Jones is questionable this week, and he should be on your bench.

Derrick Mason - Mason separated his shoulder, but returned and played well through the injury. Keep an eye on him this week, though. *edit* Mason is questionable, and he'll likely play at less than 100%. Given the Giants pass rush, it's likely Flacco has a bad day. Don't bother with Mason this week.

Deion Branch - I guess Branch might play this week, but we've heard this before. Keep an eye on him because if he could remain healthy for a couple hours, and Hasselbeck returns, he could offer some value to your team in those said hours, assuming it's during an actual game. *edit* Branch will start, but not for your fantasy lineup. He might have a solid game against Arizona, but make him prove his health before using him.

TE:

Jeremy Shockey - Shockey suffered yet another injury this week, spraining his ankle. He will again be on the injury report this week and is already turning into an enigma yet again between his injuries and his attitude. *edit* Shockey appears likely to play, but he seems to be splitting time with Billy Miller at this point, who's been more effective. Given the problems at TE this year, Shockey could be your best option and is worth sticking with.

Tony Scheffler - Scheffler, despite his great stat line, appeared hobbled by his groin injury again in week 10. With the long rest this week between last Thursday and this Sunday, hopefully he'll be ready in week 11. *edit* Scheffler is probable and should be in your lineup. He says he's not 100%, but has a good match up, and had no problem producing last Thursday.

Week 10 Injury Updates

All players have been updated for week 10. The biggest news is probably the MNF injury to Willie Parker's shoulder that will keep him out in week 10, as that came in somewhat late and unexpected this week. Also worth noting is that Big Ben returned to practice today and will start, but has a bad match up this week and should probably be avoided.

Week 10 Waiver Wire Possibilities

QB:

Brady Quinn - Quinn has usurped the starting job from the ineffective Derek Anderson and should be the top waiver wire add this week. I have a lot of confidence that Quinn will be a solid fantasy QB2, with potential QB1 value in the right match up throughout the rest of the season. He has a good line in front of him, a solid RB, and a great WR/TE combination to throw to. The only thing missing is a reliable 2nd WR, but Winslow helps make up for that.

Sage Rosenfels - Rosenfels is a must-add for Schaub owners, and an interesting add for non-Schaub owners. It appears as though he'll start 3-4 games, and there's an outside chance he could start for the rest of the season depending on how Schaub recovers from his injury. He's proven both last year and this year that he's capable of putting up very good numbers with the excellent Houston passing attack.

Shaun Hill - Hill will be SF's QB over the rest of the season barring disaster, and as someone running Martz's offense, he has potential. At worst, he'll be a QB2 like O'Sullivan who's a decent stash behind a reliable QB1. At best, he could emerge as a QB1 play in the right match up.

RB:

Ryan Torain - I told you to grab him last week, and now you have to this week as he has a good chance at starting on Thursday night as I've detailed before. Denver's running game has been incredibly erratic so far, but Shanahan loves Torain's talent, and he now has opportunity.

Ray Rice - Rice exploded for 150+ rushing yards last week, and he very well could start again this week. He's a must-add for McGahee owners, and a great speculatory add for all owners. With a strong showing again this week, he could steal the job from an injured/ineffective McGahee.

Jamaal Charles - Charles, at worst, is a good bye-week add while LJ is suspended for week 10. At best, LJ gets suspended even more and Charles continues to start games. Edwards mentioned that he doesn't view Charles as a 20 carry RB, but given the season-ending knee injury to Kolby Smith, he doesn't have much else to turn to. Charles also offers solid passing game skills, which will keep him on the field as the Chiefs will be losing far more often than winning.

Selvin Young - Young isn't healthy yet as evidenced by his inactive status last week, but he's clearly #1B on the depth chart unless Torain takes the job and runs with it. His status for this week is questionable, but he's a solid add to see how the DEN backfield shakes out over the next couple weeks.

WR:

Jerry Porter - Now this is purely a end-of-the-roster stash, but Porter showed a glimpse of life last week with a couple catches for 30ish yards. When Matt Jones finally serves his 3 game suspension, he'll immediately become the most talented pass catcher on the field for the Jaguars. He's a good WR5 to see what happens over the next couple weeks. Mike Walker is also a thought, but he's yet to see the field since his latest knee injury.

Mark Bradley/Roscoe Parrish - Both of these guys are much like Porter, but with less of an opportunity. Both are clearly secondary or tertiary options in their respective mediocre passing attacks, but both can make some noise with their opportunity. They're both talented and should see more balls their way over the next few weeks. Stash material.

TE:

Tony Scheffler - This is if an impatient owner has dropped him. Once Scheffler gets back on the field, there's no question that he'll be a top 5 TE option again. He's undoubtedly worth having on your bench while he recovers from his latest injury.

Week 10 Walking Wounded

QB:

Tony Romo - Romo is on bye in week 10, and is expected to return in week 11. That'll make 4 missed weeks, including 3 games, which was the original estimate.

Ben Roethlisberger - Roethlisberger returned to practice today and will start in week 10. Given the tough Colts secondary and the fact the Steelers will probably lean on the run, I would sit him if you have a viable alternative.

Matt Schaub - Schaub has a torn MCL, and he is out in week 10. He is expected to miss up to 4 weeks.

Carson Palmer - Palmer is out in week 10. Redrafters should probably cut bait at this point. There's no point in hanging onto him any longer.

Kyle Orton - Orton has a high ankle sprain and will probably miss 4-6 weeks. He is out in week 10.

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck is out in week 10 with his neck/leg injury.

Derek Anderson - Anderson has lost his starting job and should be dropped in all leagues.

Dan Orlovsky - Orlovsky is out multiple weeks with a sprained thumb ligament, and could miss the rest of the season. It will be a heated practice competition this week between Drew Stanton and Daunte Culpepper to see who can show the other what not to do in week 10.

RB:

Steven Jackson - Jackson completely screwed his owners by being active, but playing ineffectively, and then being benched. His status for week 10 is up in the air. At this point, the Rams should not use him unless he's 100%. Head coach Jim Haslett have said that he'll need to practice fully sometime this week in order to play, which is a very smart move. We should know by Friday if he's going to start or not. *edit* Jackson did not practice this week and is out in week 10. His replacement will split time and are NOT worth speculating on.

Willie Parker - Parker exited in week 9 with a mysterious shoulder injury, and he has been ruled out in week 10 as a result. Mewelde Moore will start for Parker and has an excellent match up against the Colts.

Reggie Bush - Bush is not expected to play in week 10, but I'll update for sure once it's clear that he's out. *edit* Bush is out in week 10.

Larry Johnson - LJ has been suspeneded by the NFL in week 10 and is out. A future, longer suspension cannot be ruled out.

Kolby Smith - Smith suffered a knee injury that will end his season. He actually ran very well against a tough TB defense last week, but went out early after a good start.

Jonathan Stewart - Stewart randomly contracted some sort of heel injury either during week 8 or in the practices since, so make sure to get him out of your lineup. He's questionable, but there's no reason for the Panthers to risk him against the Raiders. DeAngelo Williams is a borderline RB1 in a match up against Oakland.

Willis McGahee - McGahee pulled the ultimate screwjob on his owners in week 9 by being declared active, but then not being used, bringing back ugly memories of Corey Dillon in NE 2 years ago. Of course, if you drafted McGahee this year, your butt is used to this sort of thing already. There's rumors that he'll miss week 10, so keep a close eye on him. *edit* McGahee should play in week 10, but there's a very good chance that Ray Rice will dominate carries anyways.

Sammy Morris - I apologize for not putting him on here before. Morris is week-to-week with a knee injury, but should reclaim the starting RB job once he returns. His week 10 status is up in the air. *edit* Morris and Jordan are both out again. Green-Ellis and Faulk will continue to split time.

Warrick Dunn - Dunn is week-to-week, so his status in week 10 is up in the air.

WR:

Santana Moss - Moss is on bye in week 10.

Matt Jones - Jones seems to be week-to-week with his 3 game suspension looming, but has a beautiful match up against Detroit in week 10. Keep an eye for news on Tuesday or Wednesday. *edit* Jones has not been suspended yet and remains an excellent WR3 against Detroit.

TE:

Jeremy Shockey - Shockey has hopefully recovered over the bye week, but keep an eye on his practice status this week. *edit* Shockey has practiced all week without limitations and needs to be started in week 10.

Texans QB Matt Schaub Out Up To 4 Weeks

The Houston Texans have announced that QB Matt Schaub suffered a torn MCL in his knee, and he will be out up to 4 weeks.

Sage Rosenfels will replace Schaub, and he's done a good job stat-wise both last season and earlier this season in relief.

Fantasy Impact: Those who are looking for a QB over the next couple weeks should put a waiver claim in for Rosenfels. The Texans offense honestly shouldn't skip a beat, although Rosenfels is prone to making some pretty boneheaded mistakes on occasion. Do not downgrade AJ/Walter/Daniels/Slaton as the offense seems to move the ball exactly the same.

Browns QB Brady Quinn To Start In Week 10

The Cleveland Browns have benched QB Derek Anderson and will start QB Brady Quinn in week 10.

This was the risk is drafting Derek Anderson, so I hope those of you who did have stashed Quinn. If not, you'll be joining the waiver wire race to acquire him.

Fantasy Impact: Quinn makes a solid QB1 play this week against the disgusting Denver defense, and he should have no problem acclimating himself with the talent around him in Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow. He doesn't possess the huge arm like Derek Anderson does, but he will unquestionable make better decisions and improve all skill players in the Browns offense. For Braylon Edwards owners, you can view this situation like Lee Evans owners this offseason. Anderson, like JP Losman, had a big arm but made terrible decisions, so it was big play or bust for Edwards/Evans. Quinn, like Trent Edwards, will get the ball to Edwards more consistently, which will make up for lesser big plays. Now if only Edwards could catch...

Winslow is a big winner here. Quinn should excel in the intermediate game, and that's Winslow's bread and butter. Jamal Lewis should see more scoring chances.

Broncos RBs Michael Pittman and Andre Hall Placed On IR

The Denver Broncos have placed RBs Michael Pittman and Andre Hall on IR with neck and wrist injuries, respectively.

Both of their seasons are over, and both can be dropped immediately in redraft leagues. Ryan Torain and Selvin Young will carry the load over the remainder of the season, with Torain having the most upside as a perfect fit skill-wise for the Denver running scheme.

Fantasy Impact: Those who smartly stashed Torain will immediately be rewarded as he is suddenly the favorite to carry the load for Denver this Thursday night against Cleveland. Denver had the most pitiful rushing attack in team history yesterday against Miami, but as Pittman has proven earlier in the season, they can still run the ball effectively when they want to. My take? Denver was reluctant to run much with an injured Pittman, this was Torain's first game action since the first half of the college season last year, and Miami's run defense has been excellent this year with a shady secondary backing them. They now take on Cleveland's 25th ranked rushing defense, and with Selvin Young inactive last week due to a groin injury, it's unlikely he'll get much action on a short week. Torain becomes a risky, but very interesting RB2 candidate with a 15-18 carry ceiling in my eyes.

Bears QB Kyle Orton Out At Least A Month With High Ankle Sprain

Chicago Bears QB Kyle Orton is out at least a month with a high ankle sprain.

The initial hit on Orton was fine, but some asshole had to pile onto him after he was down and landed on Orton's legs, which caused an awkward bend on his ankle. High ankle sprains are horrible and usually come with a varied time of recovery, so there's no way to know right now how long Orton will be out.

Fantasy Impact: Those who had stumbled onto a surprise match up QB1 can drop their waiver wire find unless they have an extra roster spot to carry a 3rd QB. Even so, you're probably winning without Orton, meaning you don't need him. It's a real shame as he was coming into his own as both a real QB and a fantasy property prior to the injury. This kills the value of all Bears receivers/TEs as Rex Grossman has already proven how bad of a QB he is.

Week 9 Injury Updates

I have updated all players in the Walking Wounded article below as to their status for Sunday. It's almost game time! Damn daylight savings time pushing everything back an hour...

Worth noting is a rumor that Tim Hightower will start this week. If you have Edge, get him out of your lineup, not that he should have been there anyways. Hightower is worth using if you're stuck at the RB2 position as he'll probably score against the Rams, and could rack up solid yardage depending on exactly how many touches he'll receive.

Week 9 Waiver Wire Possibilities

Sorry I didn't write this yesterday, I was sick and not willing to do much of anything.

I'll touch on a couple players that I think should be owned in 12 man leagues:

Ryan Torain - If you have an open spot, you have to grab this kid. Pittman has looked good in recent weeks, but he's banged up with a rib injury. Selvin Young is still battling a groin problem, and Andre Hall fumbled away his chances of making an impact in week 7. The fact Denver never placed Torain on IR despite his elbow injury speaks volumes about what they think about this kid. As the weather gets colder and Denver can't afford to be so pass heavy, someone has to carry the rock, and Torain easily has the most upside out of the Denver backfield. He should get some action this week.

Leon Washington - Washington is a much more explosive player than Thomas Jones, but he's not going to win the starting job this year. Still, as we head into the 2nd half, all TJ owners should have him.

Donnie Avery - There's zero reason why he should still be on waiver wires. He's emerged as the top contributor in the Rams passing attack with Holt rapidly declining.

Mike Walker - With Matt Jones facing a 3 game suspension, and Jerry Porter looking terrible, Walker could emerge with a sizeable role in the offense. Unfortunately, however, his constant knee problems are still a factor, but it's worth keeping his name in your head.

Week 9 Walking Wounded

QB:

Tony Romo - Romo is still out with his broken pinkie, and there's no reason to believe that he'll play in week 9.

Carson Palmer - Palmer is currently week to week with his elbow injury, but there's no reason to think he'll play in week 9.

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck is currently week to week with his back/leg injury, and he's questionable to play in week 9. *edit* Hasselback is out in week 9.

J.T. O'Sullivan - O'Sullivan was benched for his slow morph into the Human Turnover (not delicious), and given Shaun Hill played well in the 2nd half, there's really no reason for the 49ers to start O'Sullivan again.

RB:

Steven Jackson - Jackson did not play in week 8 with his quad injury, but all signs point to him being ready to play in week 9. He'll probably have a light practice load, but a full practice at some point would be excellent news. *edit* Steven Jackson posted on his personal website yesterday that he's going to play today, and he was correct. He's a risk, but one worth taking.

Clinton Portis - Portis suffered a leg injury of some sort (there's conflict on hip/ankle) late in the 4th quarter and did not return. Given Portis had been dealing with a hip injury the past 2 weeks, this is worth watching for week 9, but it looks like he'll play for now. *edit* Portis had a limited practice on Friday, but all signs point to him starting on MNF. He's run over everyone so far, but if you have a solid option to use in his place, I'd think about it given Portis' horrible matchup. He's not invincible, and he's due for a bad game.

Reggie Bush - Bush is on bye in week 9, and is still expected to miss 1-2 more games.

Joseph Addai - Addai did not play in week 8, and his week 9 status is completely up in the air. *edit* Addai practiced in full all week and will start in week 9. He's probably not going to be the workhorse he was prior to the injury, but odds are he'll probably end up with more touches than Rhodes. I'd use him unless you have 2 true primary ball carriers.

Willie Parker - Parker seems to be week to week with his knee injury, and his week 9 status is questionable. *edit* Parker practiced fully all week and will start on MNF. Just like with Addai, expect Moore to steal a decent bit of his touches, but he'll get the ball enough to be worth using. Also like with Addai, I'd use him unless you have 2 true primary ball carriers.

Larry Johnson - LJ will be deactivated by the Chiefs in week 9. Kolby Smith will start and should see the majority of the carries. Charles will also play a role. Neither are worth using unless completely desparate.

Warrick Dunn - Dunn played very little in week 8, and his role for the near future is questionable despite him playing through the injury. *edit* Dunn is out in week 9. Expect Michael Bennett to take his role, albet in a lesser fashion. Graham makes for an excellent play, and Bennett could make his touches count against the ghastly KC run D.

WR:

Santana Moss - Moss left late in the 4th quarter in week 8 with a hamstring injury. This is a concern as Moss has been hobbled by numerous leg injuries throughout his career. Keep a close eye on him as he plays on Monday night in week 9. *edit* Moss didn't practice in full all week, and the only way you can risk him is if you have Holmes/Ward/maybe Randle El on your bench that you can play instead.

Plaxico Burress - Out of nowhere, Burress did not start and was not a big part of the offense in week 8. Between the mysterious neck injury and his constant violations of team policy, it might be good to shop him around and see what he commands. He is not a reliable fantasy player. *edit* Burress is ready for week 9, so use him if you have him.

Matt Jones - Jones is coming off his best game of the season, but will likely start serving his 3 game suspension starting in week 9. *edit* Jones was not suspended, so feel free to use him as a WR3 in week 9.

TE:

Jeremy Shockey - Shockey played again in week 8, but again looked limited by his injury. He's on bye in week 9, so hopefully that gets him close to 100%.

Week 8 Injury Updates

I have updated all players in the Walking Wounded area below. The biggest news is probably Steven Jackson's gametime decision status. Boldin will play, and Cotchery is also a gametime decision as well.

Steelers WR Santonio Holmes Suspended For 1 Game

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Santonio Holmes will be deactivated in week 8 on a team suspension for being arrested with marijuana possession.

Holmes has had prior run-ins with the law, so there's a possibility that the NFL will nail him with another suspension.

Fantasy Impact: Holmes will not play in week 8, so bench him. His replacement, Nate Washington, immediately becomes a solid WR3 play if you're hurting at the position. He's assume Holmes' deep threat role and should post solid numbers against the Giants vulnerable corners.

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Chiefs RB Larry Johnson Suspended For 1 Game

As I wrote earlier this week to expect, the Chiefs (not the NFL yet) have suspended Larry Johnson another game for violating team policy.

This is likely just a placeholder until the NFL steps in and suspends LJ even further for his abuse charges.

Fantasy Impact: LJ will miss week 8, and likely more games beyond that. Kolby Smith and Jamaal Charles will again split the load, but the Chiefs don't have it any easier this week facing the quietly 4th ranked rush defense (yards per game) of the New York Jets. Avoid the situation again.

Browns TE Kellen Winslow Suspended For 1 Game

The Cleveland Browns have suspended TE Kellen Winslow for 1 game for conduct detrimental to the team.

Winslow's outburst of frustration against the team concerning his staph infection earlier this week will cost him a game. He has a point given that Cleveland is building up an interesting (and sad) reputation of players developing staph infections. They seemingly tried to bury the fact behind a different injury, and then the truth came out. Regardless, a team will usually suspend a player when he speaks out against the organization through a public outlet. The relationship between Winslow and the Browns is deteriorating, and it's becoming increasingly likely that he'll be traded in the offseason, which would probably be good news for his fantasy value at this point.

Fantasy Impact: Winslow will not play in week 8, so you must find an alternative. The TE options are not attractive at this point in the season, but you could try your luck with someone like Anthony Fasano, Marcedes Lewis, or even Billy Miller if Shockey sits again. I would not use Winslow's backup, Steve Heiden, as his productive came in the one good game Derek Anderson has had all season.

Week 8 Waiver Wire Possibilities

QB:

Jeff Garcia - You have to temper enthusiasm given Seattle's defense is a mess right now. Regardless, Garcia did start the year playing hurt, and he looked way better last weekend. If you have some serious issues at QB2, he's worth a look, especially with a match up against Dallas' shambled secondary this week. Antonio Bryant is settling in and looking great as his primary target.

Matt Cassel - You could possibly spot-start him at home against STL this week, but he's a bottom level QB2 thanks to his horrible inconsistency.

Dan Orlovsky - Um, no.

RB:

Sammy Morris - He should obviously be owned as I already mentioned in my Maroney article, but if he's still out there, grab him. He did leave after a monster 1st half with a knee injury, and given the Patriots knack for hiding injury information, you need to be careful here. He's going to be a RB2 the rest of the year if it's not a big problem, though.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis - Ellis ran well on Monday night, although it was against Denver's disgusting run defense, so his 13 carries for 65 yards needs a bit of a star on it. If Sammy Morris misses time and Jordan continues to be injured, I see no reason why Green-Ellis wouldn't at least split time with Kevin Faulk, if not take Morris' role. He's more of a speculation pick.

Ahman Green - Ya know, he hasn't looked bad since returning. He's really only a deep depth option for Slaton owners and not much else, though.

WR:

Josh Morgan - Morgan has finally cashed in on the preseason hype and will be starting for the 49ers for the rest of the year. He celebrated with 86 yards and a TD last week, and he should be their top big play target with his speed. He'll be inconsistent, but he can be used as a WR3 in the right matchups.

Donnie Avery - Another rookie finally emerging. He's starting across from Holt, so he'll see lots of single coverage, and the dude is fast. Another possible WR3 in the right matchup, and solid bench depth.

Mike Furrey - Furrey will see decent single coverage as well, taking Roy Williams' spot across from Calvin Johnson. He should see a decent number of targets, but I just can't see him being a WR3 except for desparate owners in ideal match ups.

Marty Booker - No thanks. The Bears are still employing the first WRBC I've ever seen. He doesn't get enough targets, nor is he on the field enough.

TE:

Zach Miller - This guy shouldn't be unowned in any leagues, but I still see him available. If you drafted someone like Vernon Davis or Todd Heap, you need to be using Miller instead. Russell trusts him, and he's been pretty solid with his yardage outputs.

This was a solid week for TEs getting yardage, but I don't see any staying power for these guys. Jerramy Stevens can be watched given his talent level and the lack of receiving options behind Antonio Bryant, but that's about it.

Chiefs RB Larry Johnson In Line For A Further Suspension

Kansas City Chiefs RB Larry Johnson has been allegedly involved in multiple physical altercations with females this season, and combining that with 2 other instances prior to this year, it seems very likely the NFL will punish LJ further coming off his 1 game suspension (sorry I didn't post about it) in week 7 for missing team meetings and the like.

I don't have much to say about pieces of trash that do stuff like this. I wish he'd be permanently removed from the NFL at this point.

Fantasy Impact: His owners have no other choice than to wait it out to see what happens. He probably won't get suspended the rest of the season given the NFL has not suspended him for these incidents yet, but a 2-4 game suspension seems reasonable to expect. Kolby Smith and Jamaal Charles will split time in his place. Smith is a between-the-tackles runner and the likely favorite for goal line carries, while Charles is very fast and solid in the passing game. If you're forced to use one of them you'll have to consider your league settings (TD heavy, PPR, etc) before picking a preference. They should only be used as an emergency RB2 in great matchups.

Patriots RB Laurence Maroney To IR

The New England Patriots placed "starting" RB Laurence Maroney on IR with a shoulder injury today, ending his season.

Maroney continues to disappoint Patriots fans and fantasy owners alike with shoddy on-field performance and injuries. After a very promising close to 2007 with a great playoff run, Maroney went back to being inconsistent and mostly irrelevant. This shoulder injury has kept him out of the lineup for 2 weeks, but we probably won't know exactly what is wrong with him for some time.

Fantasy Impact: Drop Maroney in all redraft leagues, obviously. Sammy Morris, although he should have been owned already, is the #1 WW pickup this week. He'll be the starting RB for the rest of the season while Kevin Faulk gets 3rd down work.

Week 8 Walking Wounded

QB:

Tony Romo - Romo will again come down to a game time decision in week 8. There will be pressure to get him on the field given how horrible the Cowboys looked last week with Brad Johnson at the helm. *edit* Tony Romo is out in week 8.

Carson Palmer - Palmer has already been ruled out for week 8, and there are again concerns that he may still need Tommy John surgery. Wait for definitive word, but with the Bengals facing a lost season, exercising caution with their franchise QB is their best choice.

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck is highly unlikely to play again in week 8, although more will be known later this week. *edit* Hasselbeck is out in week 8.

Brodie Croyle - Welcome back Brod...there he goes again. Croyle tore his MCL and is out for the season, not that he should have been on your roster anyways.

Damon Huard - Huard decided to get the hell out of there as well with a thumb injury. No report on the severity, but owners of Bowe and Gonzalez are praying that he's OK. Behind Huard? Tyler Thigpen. *edit* Huard was placed in IR with thumb ligament damage. He's done for the year.

RB:

Brian Westbrook - Initial reports about Westbrook playing in week 8 are positive, but you never know for sure with Westbrook. Rib injuries can be very tricky. Keep a close eye on his practice schedule, but if you've owned Westbrook before, you know the drill. *edit* Westbrook is putting in full practices and will start in week 8.

Steven Jackson - Jackson pulled his quad in week 7, and his status in week 8 is not known as of now. *edit* Jackson put in a limited practice on Friday, is listed as questionable and will be a gametime decision.

Reggie Bush - Bush was finally putting together the fantasy season owners were dreaming of, especially in leagues that count return TDs, but Bush tore his meniscus and will miss 2-4 weeks. He is out in week 8.

Joseph Addai - Addai is unlikely to play in week 8, but we'll see if the Colts are actually telling the truth by his practice schedule this week. Keep an eye on him, but TEN looms next, and unless Addai is 100%, you don't want him in your lineup. *edit* Only went through one limited practice. Expect him to either backup Rhodes, or be out on Monday night. Still, with the matchup against TEN, I wouldn't use either given the lingering uncertainty.

Willie Parker - Parker is a complete question mark for week 8, so keep an eye on his practice schedule. Moore was outstanding in his place during week 7. *edit* Parker suffered another setback in practice and is out in week 8.

Willis McGahee - McGahee finally broke through with 150 total yards and a score, most of that coming when the Phins lost mammoth NT Jason Ferguson and their run D fell apart. Still, McGahee looked the best he has all year, but he also played through pain in the knee he injured during the preseason. As usual, keep an eye on his practice schedule. *edit* McGahee is probable and will start. Use him against Oakland.

Warrick Dunn - Dunn suffered a pinched nerve in his back last night, and given his older body, this is worth keeping track of. Should he miss time, Earnest Graham would get all the carries and be an excellent fantasy play. *edit* Dunn is questionable and a gametime decision.

WR:

Anquan Boldin - Boldin's week 8 status is up the air. The Cardinals came out this week and stated that there was more to the injury, adding a concussion and broken bones in his jaw to the list of injuries he suffered on that nasty hit. He did however return to a non-contact practice today, and could be cleared tomorrow. I'll update once I find out. *edit* Boldin will play in week 8, although limited snaps. Still, start him.

Chris Chambers - Another week of uncertainty for Chambers, who has missed 2 weeks with his ankle injury now. More will be known later this week. *edit* Chambers is questionable and not worth using this week even if he does play.

Jerricho Cotchery - Cotchery left hurt for a bit in week 7, but returned and did nothing. I'm far more likely to blame this on being covered by the best corner in the NFL (Nnamdi Asomugha) than anything, but I'll keep an eye on any additional injury information. *edit* Cotchery is questionable and a gametime decision. Use him if he plays.

Laveraneous Coles - Coles suffered a head injury during week 7, but since Jets' coach Eric Mangini hails from the Belichick "dodge the injury report" thought process, we might not find out if it was a concussion. This is worth monitoring. *edit* Coles is probable and will start, so no concerns here. The concussion was mild.

Kevin Curtis - There's a decent chance he returns this week. We'll find out via practice reports. *edit* Curtis has returned to full practices and will start in week 8.

TE:

Jeremy Shockey - Shockey returned in week 7, but didn't look that great despite posting decent receiving numbers. He made the team flight to London for the overseas game, but keep an eye on his practice schedule. *edit* Shockey is probable and will start, so go ahead and use him, but keep expectations in check.

Colts RB Joseph Addai Out 2-4 Weeks With Torn Hamstring

The Indianapolis Colts have stated that RB Joseph Addai is expected to miss 2-4 weeks after an MRI revealed a partial tear in Addai's hamstring that caused him to exit early in week 6.

Dominic Rhodes will replace Addai as the starter and must be owned in all leagues. The Colts play Green Bay this week, and GB's run defense has not been good, ranking dead last in YPC and 27th in rushing yards per game.

Fantasy Impact: Addai owners probably should have drafted Rhodes in the last round given Addai's injury problems last year, and they definitely should have attempted to grab Rhodes on the WW this week as I stated in my WW article. Rhodes will be an excellent RB to use this week, although he does have some tough matchups over the next couple weeks, including Tennessee in week 8 and Pittsburgh in week 10. Addai is proving to be a bust with poor play and continued injury problems. He should not be "bought low", and if you own him, hopefully he heels quickly and has a strong finish to the season.

Lions WR Roy Williams Traded To The Dallas Cowboys

The Detroit Lions have traded WR Roy Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for 1st, 3rd, and 6th round draft picks.

Dallas isn't going to be able to sit for a week. A 1st, 3rd, and 6th for a WR who has proven little on the field other than a lack of focus, and whose contract is expiring at the end of the year? Now Dallas HAS to re-sign him to a big contract for the trade to be even close to worth it. Detroit cashed in huge by dealing a player who wasn't going to do anything for them over the course of the year (Unless you count dropped passes, wrong routes, and public bitching. I don't.), and who gave them zero reason to re-sign come year's end when he would have walked away for nothing. Sure, Williams upgrades the offensive talent and will probably re-focus himself in Dallas, but he'll have to do so with Brad Johnson for a month. This will cause even less targets for Owens, and given Witten is there as well, less targets for Williams as he is arguably the 3rd option in the passing game now, and arguably the 4th option in the offense. Good times.

However, if Dallas does re-sign him, Roy Williams finds his focus, and he plays to his talent level, then Dallas has found Owens' eventual replacement as Williams possesses a similar skill set as a big, physical receiver who can get open deep. They certainly overpaid, but there's at least a possibility that they'll get some value back from this trade moving forward.

Fantasy Impact: Roy Williams' fantasy stock probably stays as is with Brad Johnson under center, plus he'll have to learn the playbook, but it increases a bit once Romo returns and he's comfortable in the offense. He'll have to do more with less as he's no longer battling for the primary focus of the passing game. However, I do bet he'll focus more while playing on a winning team and back home in Texas. Crayton is the big loser here as he'll move to the slot and see much less time on the field. Romo, Owens, Witten, and Barber all stay about the same.

NFL Week 6 Trading Deadline

The NFL 2008 trading deadline is today, FYI. There have been some fantasy-relevant players like Roy Williams and Tony Gonzalez mentioned in trade rumors, but it's just talk for now.

The NFL trading deadline used to be a buried story as no teams tried to deal players, but last season Chris Chambers was traded from Miami to San Diego, so there's a possibility that a bigger name player could be dealt before the deadline. I'll shoot out a new post if anything gets done.

Owners of both Williams and Gonzalez should be rooting for a trade as they would obviously see an increase in fantasy value moving to a better offense.

Week 7 Waiver Wire Possibilities

QB:

Matt Ryan - Ryan appears to be for real. He might have been picked up already, but his performance against a tough Bears defense was impressive. Now the Bears lost Tillman mid-game and Vasher was out, and they don't blitz, so the performance does have a caveat, but he's benefiting from the attention Turner is attracting, and Roddy White is consistently making plays for him. He's a match up play, but with the QB turnover the past couple weeks, he can help your team.

Gus Frerotte - He seems to be taking well to Minnesota's offense. He's using the 8 defenders in the box to find Berrian deep consistently. Now he's strictly a match up play only, but he could be a bye-week fill-in for the QB carnage going on these days.

Jeff Garcia - Desparate times call for desparate measures. He's a possibility if nothing else is out there and you need another QB. He actually posted semi-respectable numbers against a tough Carolina pass defense.

RB:

Dominic Rhodes - Your #1 waiver priority. With Addai going down with a hamstring injury, and the Colts refusing to talk about it, it's worth it to nab a potential starting RB for a week or three. Now it's possible Addai returns this week, but I'd personally take the chance if you need immediate RB help, and especially if you own Addai.

Sammy Morris - Maroney and Jordan were scratches, and Morris got the backfield work. He was hardly impressive with 10 carries for 26 yards, but he tossed in a TD and 49 receiving yards. He's the current alpha dog of the NE backfield and is worth owning.

Patrick Cobbs - If I need to tell you that last week was a fluke, stop playing fantasy football.

WR:

Lance Moore - Moore might get dropped with Colston coming back, but there's no reason to drop him. He's going to be entrenched opposite Colston in the starting lineup, and I apologize for being lukewarm on adding him 2 weeks ago. He's claimed the starting position, and with Shockey possibly out again, he'd be WR3 material this week even with Colston back as he'll divert attention.

Malcolm Floyd - If Chambers misses another game, Floyd will start and take his role in the offense. He's very much like Devery Henderson in that he'll only catch 2-3 passes, but he'll be targeted deep. He's the ultimate boom/bust, but you might need him.

TE:

Marcedes Lewis - We probably just saw Lewis' best game of the season on Sunday with 64 yards and a TD, but he's quietly in the top 10 of TEs for targets and makes for a worthwhile add. He isn't going to be consistent, but at this point, not many are at the TE position.

Week 7 Walking Wounded

Sorry to everyone for missing my usual Friday injury updates for week 6. Let's get back to it with the week 7 injuries. I will not cover injured players on bye in week 7 as they'll be on your bench anyways.

QB:

Tony Romo - Fantasy owners are no doubt freaking with the news that Romo fractured his pinkie finger and will miss 4-5 weeks. Which means 3-4 games. Brad Johnson will take his place, and while he is an interesting (albeit conservative) week 7 option against STL, he's not recommended beyond that. Downgrade all Cowboys, especially T.O. *edit* Tony Romo will not start in week 7.

Carson Palmer - Palmer has already been ruled out for week 7, and again looks like a dicey bet for the rest of the season. He's going to see the New York Mets pitching doctor, so hopefully some definitive news beyond this week will be known soon. Ryan Fitzpatrick has been a disaster in his place, and will continue to be such. *edit* Carson Palmer is again facing the threat of season-ending surgery. I'd still hold onto him until news is official.

Matt Hasselbeck - Hasselbeck is out in week 7, but with a bulging disc in his back as opposed to his knee. It's very possible he'll miss multiple weeks beyond this.

Trent Edwards - Edwards practiced on Monday and will be starting again in week 7 after missing week 5 with a concussion. Losman will head back to the bench. *edit* Edwards is starting in week 7.

Jon Kitna - Kitna's week 7 status is in doubt, and so is his starting job for the rest of the season. If he's your QB2 you need to drop him and find someone better on the waiver wire. *edit* Kitna is out in week 7, and was placed on IR. Drop him immediately if you didn't after I suggested doing it the first 8 times.

Ben Roethlisberger / Aaron Rodgers - 2 fantasy starters who have been dealing with injuries, but have looked fine on gameday. Big Ben has hopefully mostly healed over the bye week, and Rodgers continues to look fine on gameday. *edit* Both are starting in week 7 and have excellent matchups.

RB:

Joseph Addai - Addai suffered a potentially serious hamstring injury, and the Colts haven't been forthcoming with any sort of information about it. Dominic Rhodes will start should Addai miss time, and he needs to be added in every league. *edit* Addai is out 2-4 weeks. The Colts are denying it, but I'm not buying it.

Willie Parker - Parker practiced on Monday and is ready to start in week 7. *edit* Parker re-injured his knee in practice and is out for week 7. Mewelde Moore will start in his place.

Willis McGahee - McGahee also suffered some sort of injury that knocked him from the game in week 6, and little is known about it. Last week was the one week McGahee could have totally redeemed himself, but unlike Lloyd Christmas, he failed to do so. Keep him rostered, but don't let him anywhere near your lineup. *edit* McGahee will start in week 7, and I guess you could do worse for an emergency if you didn't get Rhodes/Moore/Morris.

Selvin Young - Young missed week 6 with a groin injury, and his status for week 7 is uncertain. Given the way Michael Pittman played, Young has probably lost his starting job. It was clear Shanahan didn't trust him as a featured RB this season. *edit* Young is out again in week 7. With Pittman running well and Torain close to returning, you can drop Young if you like someone better out there.

Kevin Smith - Smith left with a shoulder injury in week 6, did not return, and his status for week 7 is uncertain. Rudi would dominate the backfield should Smith miss week 7, but given the disastrous state of the Lions offense, it'd be hard to recommend him, although Houston's defense is allowing 4.5 YPC on the season. *edit* Smith returned to practice on Friday and will resume his timeshare role.

Chris Perry - No injury, he just sucks. After a couple promising outings against tough defenses in weeks 2 and 3, he's been absolute crap. I plan on dropping him from both of my teams if I can land Rhodes. Kenny Watson and Cedric Benson will likely battle to start in week 7 as there's strong rumors of him being benched. *edit* Cedric Benson is the new starter. Drop Perry.

Laurence Maroney - In the lineup, out of the lineup. Who knows what's really wrong with him, and if you see someone like Michael Pittman or Dominic Rhodes on your waiver wire, cut bait with Maroney. He still has untapped talent, but it's starting to become clear that he again won't put it on display this season. *edit* Maroney is doubtful, and Sammy Morris will dominate the carries in his place.

WR:

Marques Colston - Oh so close to playing in week 6, but it would be a shock if he didn't play in week 7. He should be all systems go, and back to being a borderline WR1. *edit* Colston is starting in week 7. Get him in your lineup.

Chris Chambers - Chambers missed week 6 with an ankle injury, and nothing is known about his week 7 status as the Chargers haven't identified what exactly the injury is. That being said, I would guess it's a multi-week injury. *edit* Chambers is out in week 7. Malcolm Floyd will start in his place.

Eddie Royal - Royal missed week 6 with an ankle sprain, but there's some optimism about returning in week 7. We'll know more later this week. *edit* Royal will resume starting in week 7, so start him if you were on the fence.

Brandon Stokley - Stokley was a solid one week fill-in for Royal owners with a couple catches and a TD, but was concussed in the first half and didn't return. His status for week 7 is in question. *edit* Stokley is unlikely to play in week 7. Do not use him.

Deion Branch - Branch missed week 6 with a heel injury, and even though he might return in week 7, he's not worth using with Hasselbeck out unless Frye shows improvement in his next game. *edit* Branch is out in week 7.

TE:

Kellen Winslow - Winslow probably won't play this evening with some gross swollen testicle issue, but odds are he'll be ready for week 7 as he seemed somewhat close to play this week. *edit* Winslow will start in week 7, so you should start him too.

Jeremy Shockey - Shockey seemingly came close to playing in week 6, but he's still uncertain for week 7 as he only put in limited practices last week. I'll update him further later this week. *edit* Shockey will start in week 7, so you should start him too.

Tony Scheffler - Scheffler missed week 6 with a groin injury, and his status for week 7 is in question as of now. *edit* Scheffler looks unlikely to play, and his bye week is next week, so there's no reason for Denver to force him back out there. Don't use him.

Week 6 Waiver Wire Possibilities

QB:

Marc Bulger - If you have recent lost your QB2, someone like Jon Kitna, seriously consider an upside pick like Marc Bulger. Bulger won't return to his pre-2007 performance with the current state of the Rams offense, but like I said last week, I expect better things with the coaching change. The Rams never should have benched him to begin with.

Gus Frerotte - If someone like Bulger isn't available, you can try taking a shot with Frerotte. He looked solid last night. The Vikings will undoubtedly be a run first team, but Frerotte will be trusted to throw it deep to Berrian and Rice (when he returns). He showed last night that he's much more accurate with the deep ball than Jackson, and he should be able to take advantage of the defenses putting 8 in the box.

RB:

Justin Fargas - If for some reason he was dropped, get him. All indications point to him starting this week, and he should continue to start until he gets hurt again. McFadden still appears to be ailing, and the coaching staff apparently isn't thrilled with Michael Bush despite his impressive performances when given the chance.

Correll Buckhalter - All Westbrook owners need him anyways. If he was dropped with Westbrook returning last week, and you're either a Westbrook owner or someone in need of an RB2 this week, grab him. It would be stupid for Westbrook to play this week, and Buckhalter has a solid matchup against the 49ers in week 6.

Michael Pittman - If you can't get Buckhalter and are really hurting for an RB2 this week, it might be worth a shot to snag Pittman. Shanahanigans are in full effect this year, but Pittman is the Broncos' RB with the most value. He's getting the goal line carries, and he might be in line for more regular work if Young's groin is giving him problems.

Ryan Torain - If you drafted prior to Torain's elbow injury, he was dropped in redraft leagues. If you drafted after Torain's elbow injury, he wasn't drafted at all. If you have a spot that you're not doing much with, pick up Torain and wait for his possibly week 9 return. Torain had a serious shot at starting week 1 with a big preseason, but his elbow injury prevented that. Given the injury was to his elbow and not his legs, Torain has a good chance of making some sort of impact immediately. This is the type of waiver pickup that could really pay off down the stretch.

WR:

Lance Moore/Robert Meachem/Devery Henderson - I would imagine all these guys are owned in your league, but with the way Brees is spreading the ball around with the absences of Colston and Shockey, all are worth owning, and possibly using depending on your WR3 situation.

Brandon Stokley - With the injuries to both Eddie Royal and Tony Scheffler this weekend, Cutler needs some new targets to throw to other than Brandon Marshall. Stokley should emerge as his top secondary target, although do keep an eye on Darrell Jackson as well, if he even plays.

Mike Walker - Walker had a breakout game in week 5 with 6 catches for 107 yards. He's a talented speedster who has battled knee injuries, and he might have suffered another knee injury this past week, but he's someone to toss on your bench to see what happens. Matt Jones is also there, Jerry Porter is still working his way back, and the Jags will probably remain run-first despite the offensive line issues, but he's a solid upside WR5 guy. Just don't got wasting a high waiver pick on him unless you're really hurting at WR. Even then, I think Stokley is a better option, but Walker remains interesting.

Sinorice Moss - I know he scored 2 TDs last week, but Burress returns from his suspension this week, and the only reason Moss was targeted so much was the in-game injury to Dominik Hixon. Pass.

TE:

Zach Miller - You might have forgotten about him with the Raiders bye week in week 5, but he's worth picking up as a bye week/injury replacement.

Nate Jackson - Jackson will take the injured Scheffler's role as the pass catching TE in Denver's offense, so he's worth a look if you don't have a starter for this week.
